UPCOMING PLACES REVIEW: THE WHEELHOUSE – DUNSMUIR, CA

Here’s a new discovery for us! My friend Paul texted me some photos of Cantillon Classic Gueuze a few weeks back. I asked him where the photos were from, and he told me they were from this very cool café called The Wheelhouse in Dunsmuir, California. Paul told me that their selection of Belgian beers was outstanding.

I had to find out more. I did some research, and discovered that their specialties are 3 Fonteinen and Cantillon Lambics, among many other beers from Belgium. We paid them a visit last night- what fun we had! We enjoyed a number of great Belgian beers, and fantastic food. I had their green lip mussels cooked in 3 Fonteinen Oude Gueuze served with crusty bread and frites- oh sooooooo good!

The Wheelhouse is a must visit when travelling through Northern California! They are located at 5841 Sacramento Ave, Dunsmuir, CA 96025.

These pictures are just a small sample of the many others that will appear on our upcoming PLACES REVIEW that will feature The Wheelhouse at Beer Review Journal very soon.

Stay tuned…

UPCOMING BEER REVIEWS

Many thanks to Merchant du Vin for sending us these samples from their product portfolio for us to publish beer reviews on. This will be our first time trying these beers.

The first beer from this group we will publish a beer review on will be from the Mount Saint Bernard Abbey, Tynt Meadow Trappist Ale. Released in 2018- it has gained wide praise; it’s about time we tried it! The Mount Saint Bernard Abbey in Leicestershire, England is the newest Trappist Abbey to start a brewery, and to earn the legal right to be called an AUTHENTIC TRAPPIST PRODUCT by the International Trappist Association.

Of course, the Westmalle Trappist Extra will have its beer review following immediately afterward. Released to the public in 2001, the Extra is considered what is known as a Table beer (Bière de table in French, Tafelbier in Dutch). It is the beer that the Westmalle monks enjoy with their meals. At only 4.8% ABV, it is a beer that is refreshing and light. We can’t wait to try it as well.

Stay tuned for these next two upcoming beer reviews to Beer Review Journal.

Have you ever found yourself enjoying a delicious bottle of Belgian Tripel and wondering why this tasty beer style isn’t more widely celebrated? That’s why the folks at TripelDay.com decided to create International Tripel Day – a day dedicated to honoring and enjoying one of the world’s greatest beer styles.

International Tripel Day was born in February 2022, while they were enjoying a bottle of Westmalle Tripel and reflecting on the lack of representation of this style at their local breweries. They asked themselves, “Why isn’t there a day to celebrate the mighty and enigmatic Tripel, like there are for other beer styles?” And so, they decided to make it happen.

From this day forward, March 3rd – the Third day of the Third month – will be a day devoted to Belgian Tripels and all the joy they bring. So mark your calendars and join us in celebrating International Tripel Day!

BEER REVIEW: BROUWERIJ DE PROEF – GREEN’S QUEST GLUTEN FREE TRIPEL – LOCHRISTI, BELGIUM

Having tasted many of the “contract beers” from De Proef, I was very curious when the Green’s Gluten Free line of beers became available. Of course, I gravitated to the Dubbel and Tripel. READ MORE >>>

BEER REVIEW: BROUWERIJ RODENBACH – RODENBACH CLASSIC – ROESELARE, BELGIUM

During these past 4 decades tasting the classic beer styles from Belgium, one of the styles I was intrigued with was the Red Ales from the Flanders region of Belgium. When I saw the pictures of the hundreds of oak foeders at Brouwerij Rodenbach in Michael Jackson’s The World Guide to Beer book in the 80’s, I knew I had to seek out their beers. Finding them in my area at the time was not easy. I have to say, the first time I tried any Rodenbach beer was in the early 90’s, only because that’s when it first became available in the San Francisco East Bay market. Good things come to those who are patient and persistent. The wait was worth it… READ MORE >>
