Greetings! I am Gordon A. Ponce, Chief Executive Officer at Beer Review Journal. With an unwavering passion for extraordinary beers from around the globe, my enchantment with beer commenced in the summer of 1983, at 19 years of age. It all can be traced back to my immersive exploration of the illustrious masterpiece called “World Guide to Beer,” authored by the late British beer writer, Michael Jackson.
Enthralled by the alluring depictions in that book, I was filled with a longing to savor my first ever Belgian beer. As a result, I embarked on a journey to find the renowned Chimay Première, identifiable by its striking red bottle cap. That encounter with the Trappist Ale turned out to be life-changing, cementing my commitment to the world of Belgian beer and driving me to relentlessly pursue greater knowledge in this realm.
WRITING ABOUT BEER
In 1997, I embarked on my journey of writing about Belgian beer with the creation of my very first website, The Beermaster’s Cafe. One of my earliest beer reviews was dedicated to Brewery Ommegang’s Abbey Dubbel, a remarkable brew that even found its way into the brewery’s newsletter. Additionally, I had the opportunity to write reviews for various breweries that were showcased by the U.S. importer, Global Beer Network, during their initial establishment in California.
Back in September 2013, I brought back to life my initial concept of a beer review website and decided to give it a fresh name – Belgian Beer Journal. It didn’t take long for the website to gather a significant number of followers, both from within the country and abroad, with social media playing a major role in its popularity. Additionally, I established valuable connections within the beer industry and shared numerous reviews of both beers and breweries.
Beer Review Journal was established in August 2022, building upon the framework of Belgian Beer Journal, with the aim of carrying forward its legacy.
